Healthy Tree - Healthy Wildlife Tour

  • Bill & Margie Haag 8801 Little Tavern Creek Road MO United States (map)

University of Missouri Extension and partners invite the public to a forest and wildlife field day Saturday, September 13, in Callaway County. The workshop will be held on Bill and Margie Haag’s property near Portland, MO from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A driving tour of the Haag property will demonstrate strategies for healthy trees and wildlife. “You will see young and old patches of woods and hear about the different wildlife that use them,” says MU Extension sustainable forestry specialist Brian Schweiss.

Professionals from the Missouri Department of Conservation and MU Extension as well as consulting foresters will be available to answer questions and provide insight on management practices such as thinning, prescribed fire and invasive species control. Participants can also learn about how to receive a free visit from a consulting forester.

“Sometimes nature needs a little help,” Schweiss says. “Join us to learn what you can do to keep trees and wildlife thriving on your land.”

The Haag family takes great pride in their woods, he says. Through timber sales, they generate revenue and improve conditions for wildlife. “This tour is a great resource for landowners wanting to see the benefits of properly conducted timber sales and other practices for wildlife.”

The event is free to the public, and lunch will be provided. Register at https://mizzou.us/healthytreesandwildlife by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10.

For questions, contact Schweiss at schweissb@missouri.edu or (573) 882-4775 or contact Tom Westhoff at westhoff@windstream.net or (573) 289-0242.
